In 1961, Thomas (Tom) and Elone Blevins moved from Chinook, Montana to the West side of the Mission Mountains where they made 120 acres of land in Ronan, Montana their home. They raised their family in ranching and worked hard to construct what is now The Blevins Angus Ranch. Elone took a nursing position in the mid 60’s in Ronan and Tom worked their new ranch 24/7. They started out with Red Angus, Hereford, and Dairy cows.

In 1973 Tom sent Elone’s father, Elmer Strissel, over to Chinook area to buy a bull for the ranch from Rudolph Angus. Elmer purchased the first registered Black Angus bull there and thought he might as well bring home 2 registered heifers to go along with that bull. Tom bought another registered bred heifer in the fall. The ranch calved out its first 3 registered black angus calves in the spring of 74’. This marked the beginning of the transition to registered Black Angus for the Blevins family.

Over the next 10 years or so The Blevins sold off their Red Angus, Hereford, commercial Black Angus, and Dairy cattle to invest in registered Black Angus stock. Tom meticulously built his herd with cows whose background genetics are prevalent in many registered animals throughout the angus association to this day. The Blevins sold cattle through private treaty on the ranch until 2001 when The Five Valleys Stockyard in Missoula, Montana became the location for the family’s annual sale.

In 2014 after the passing of Tom Blevins, his son Wayne continued the dream that Tom and Elone had started. Wayne had lived and worked on the ranch since childhood, he married Kellie in 89’. Together they raised their two sons and daughter on the ranch. Justin, Latham, and Kelsie, irrigated pasture, fed yearlings, put up hay for the animals, and helped with anything else that involved the ranch’s operation.

Today, Wayne and Kellie operate the ranch with the help of their sons, Justin, and Latham. Wayne has always worked to improve genetics in his cow herd and has AI’d since the spring of 1981. Looking to the future, Wayne strives to meet and exceed the needs of cattle production for his buyers. He is always appreciative of families who have added the Blevins seed stock to their programs. The B.A.R will always maintain and build on the production standards that the family has worked hard to achieve for the last 50 years!
